Testimony of Sr Isabel Lopez on her relationship with Jorge Bergoglio – Pope Francis

His presence and accompaniment have been fundamental during my formation, although his external appearance made me feel a bit scared, his words and gestures inspired me and accompanied me throughout my religious life. Today I can say that I am deeply grateful for all that I have received from him. He was for a while my spiritual companion, and I also did spiritual exercises with him, he was the one who gave me the one-month spiritual exercises before my perpetual vows

He received us at the Colegio Máximo in San Miguel, and while doing the accompaniment, he would sometimes get up to stop the washing machine or put out the fire in the kitchen; this shows me the simplicity and ordinariness in which he lived.

I share some of the words that I treasure and that continue to shed light on my life:

  • The most important thing in religious life is to open your heart to God. Don’t think that by wearing a habit the difficulties will disappear.
  • He spoke to me about the importance of taking care of grace, the life of prayer… that a vocation is not lost all at once but slowly step by step in stages.
  • It is when we give ourselves entirely to the Lord, responding to his call, in mission, that the evil spirit tempts us the most, when crises and difficulties arise,
  • He has always insisted on faithfulness and responsibility.
  • You have to work until you die and die without giving up work.
