On 14 September 2025 IBVM celebrated 180 years of presence in Mauritius.
The first 8 sisters arrived on 8 September 1845 in Mauritius and immediately started their education ministry. Generations of girls have received excellent holistic education in the now 9 Loreto schools on the island. Pastoral and spiritual ministry has developed alongside – the region has two Spiritual Centres which are in high demand.
The region at present has 18 sisters who collaborate with very committed lay people in the different institutions and ministries.
The solemn Eucharist on 14 September, followed by a joyful gathering was a real highlight. Friends of Loreto had come from all over the island and celebrated together joyfully. A special joy was the presence of 4 former missionaries, IBVM sisters from Ireland and Australia who had come for this occasion.
